Duet For Non-Things & Forsaken Objects

Only The Lonely // April 23-24, 2021

In Duet for Non-Things and Forsaken Objects, we chronicle the quotidian during the pandemic and explore the boundaries of embodiment in a time of restriction. The three-minute screendances illustrate a shifting landscape of movement – a landscape that changes depending on the order and vantage point from which the audience chooses to interact. A portion of the work was filmed in our apartment, inviting an intimate relationship between performer, viewer, and objects in the space. As part of the study on apartment life, we also incorporate mixed-media movement including stop-motion animation, featuring small objects such as Lego men, ceramic animals, and Totoro figurines as the “dancers.” We hope to simultaneously bring play into the dances, and evoke an exploration of “thing” – the ways objects occasionally act upon us, uncannily venturing out of their prescribed purpose.

Peruse, meander, and wonder through the videos at your leisure. There is no established order to the above pieces.

Land Acknowledgement

We are grateful to be able to create dance in so-called Salt Lake City, the traditional and ancestral homelands of the Shoshone, Paiute, Goshute, and Ute Tribes, and a crossroad for Indigenous peoples. The outdoor footage was taken at Antelope Island State Park, which is on Goshute land.
